OSINT Challenge Reflection: Tools, Techniques, and Real-World Applications
In this post, we dive deeper into the methods used during the recent OSINT (Open-Source Intelligence) challenge and explore how these techniques apply to real-world scenarios. The challenge provided valuable insights into the effectiveness of various tools, along with lessons learned that are useful for anyone looking to improve their OSINT skills.
Tools and Techniques Breakdown
1. Google (and Bing!) Reverse Image Search
Google and Bing’s reverse image search feature was instrumental in locating the source of the outdated satellite image. By uploading the image, we were able to identify a matching location on a Blogger website. I did try Yandex as well, but I found Google and Bing’s process more intuitive and easier to get good results from.
Why It Worked:
- Effectiveness: It’s an efficient way to find visually similar content across the web, which can reveal valuable context or source materials, such as identifying landmarks or military bases.
- Real-World Use: This tool is commonly used in journalism and security for tracking down the origin of images, identifying fakes, or locating key sites in conflict zones.
Tips for Future Use:
- Use Specific Filters: Sometimes narrowing down image searches by date or relevance can help refine the results further.
- Cross-Reference Results: It’s important to compare your results across multiple sources to avoid false positives.
2. What3Words Geolocation
What3Words was a pivotal tool for determining the exact location of the northernmost submarine. By dividing the world into 3-meter squares, this tool provides a precise way to locate and communicate positions.
Why It Worked:
- Precision: What3Words is an excellent tool when you need pinpoint accuracy, especially when GPS coordinates are too broad.
- Real-World Use: Used by emergency services, disaster response teams, and logistics companies to provide precise locations in situations where traditional addresses are insufficient.
Tips for Future Use:
- Combine with Satellite Images: Satellite view in What3Words helped ensure accuracy when identifying specific parts of the submarine.
- Use for More Than Navigation: It’s a useful tool for OSINT challenges where precision is key, but it can also be applied in real-world investigations for tracking assets or even people.
3. Bing and Google Maps for Cross-Verification
Cross-referencing between Bing and Google Maps provided the necessary validation that the location identified on one platform was indeed accurate.
Why It Worked:
- Multiple Perspectives: Using different platforms helps ensure that you’re seeing the most up-to-date and accurate imagery, as map databases are frequently updated at different times.
- Real-World Use: This is an essential technique in OSINT investigations to verify locations, track movements, and gather additional intelligence on key points of interest.
Tips for Future Use:
- Measure Distances: Tools like Google’s ruler feature helped us determine the length of the submarine, critical in classifying it by NATO standards.
- Switch Views: Don’t rely solely on one map view (e.g., satellite). Check other perspectives such as street view or 3D views when available to gather more contextual information.
Lessons Learned
What Worked Well:
- Methodical Research: Using a step-by-step approach helped break the challenge into manageable parts, from locating the submarine base to identifying the submarine class.
- Tool Combination: The synergy of using multiple tools—reverse image search, What3Words, and mapping platforms—enabled greater accuracy in completing the challenge.

- Identifying the Submarine Class: While the NATO reporting name provided a clue, determining the exact class required some guesswork and research. A detailed understanding of submarine characteristics, including size and appearance, was crucial.
- Outdated Imagery: The challenge of working with outdated satellite images highlighted the importance of finding updated sources, and emphasized the need for multiple cross-references.
Room for Improvement:
- Better Use of Historical Data: In future challenges, using platforms that provide historical satellite data (e.g., TerraServer or Sentinel Hub) might help find more accurate comparisons.
